't be surprised because there's mounting anger over the pace of the recovery effort to hurricane super storm sandy. it has been 12 days since that super storm hit and as you can see there are hard hit places like long beach, new york, still looking very much like disaster areas and that has prompted some angry protests today outside one power company, by the folks who say they feel completely abandoned by the government. listen. >> because we cannot live like this. we can't, we can't. >> i'm disgusted with them. i think that they should have to-- >> it's not anger now, now it's like broken people. people are being broken. it's horrible when you walk down the street and you say hello to someone you don't know and you smile and they're like thank god. there is anger and people are getting broken and disenfranchised and it will turn into anger and you don't want to do that. >> jamie: anger and so much sadness. peter doocy joining us live from washington. i've been out there, peter, it's just tragic. >> it is tragic, jamie, about 3% of new jersey and 2% of the whole state of new york are still without

're following this hour, slow pace of storm recovery efforts in the northeast. 12 days after sandy, some residents saying they are not receiving any help from fema or even the red cross. with such widespread devastation residents are dealing without basic services. that before the storm they took for granted. >> no water. no heat. no lights, garbage not being picked up. garbage, halfway. garbage thrown everywhere. smell. the environment out here is terrible as far as smelling. odor is horrendous. it's depressing. >> gregg: anna is covering this live at staten island. >> we are 300 yards from the water at one of six dumping stations around staten island. we have been watching this debris pile up for two weeks in the nor'easter that hit last week. it did slow the crews. it's quite an active scene behind me today. a sign of progress being made. that is good sign. also hundreds of volunteers piled into buses at city hall this morning with their own tools and shovels helping out super storm sandy victims. volunteers sorting goods going house to house and cleaning up parks. groups are leaving

to affect areas hit by sandy. trends are off shore. things are looking nice as we approach the holidays next weekend. let's talk about what's happened out there. i mentioned that there was an amazing northern lights show going on. this is a picture from the top of mount washington. one of the highest spots in new england. 6,000 feet in new hampshire. there's a weather observatory where they do 24 hour weather observations and they have these amazing images of the northern lights. it was a great show from michigan all the way through vermont and maine. this image captured it well. as far as what's going on out there, not much. nice quiet weather period across the country. another chilly start in the 30s for many people, even the 40s in the deep south. it's a cold, dry air mass pretty much covering much of the nation. doesn't have a lot of tropical origins to it. it's a polar air mass. the only area of rain that we have is down here in the southeast. it's a pretty good solid shield of light rain, even lightening strikes from georgia into south carolina. now trying to go up to wilmington and ar

after hurricane sandy hit. we begin with breaking news, a story that has blindsided the american intelligence community and the obama administration, and it's still developing at this hour. general david petraeus resigned today as director of the cia after admitting he had an extramarital affair. they confirm to cnn that the investigators have been exploring tips on an affair with eleanor broadbar. they tried to see if there was a potential security risk, in other words, perhaps petraeus was blackmailed. she is the one with whom petraeus admitted having an affair. petraeus is a highly respected, four-star general who commanded forces in both iraq and afghanistan. he was sworn in to run the cia a little over a year ago with vice president biden with his wife holly at his side. that was the swearing in. they've been married 35 years, have two grown kids. so how will this revelation impact the committee? member of the cia's external advisory committee, and also cnn's officer, and intelligence correspondent. susan, let's start with you. what can you tell us about this probe with paul

the jersey shore nearly two weeks after sandy, those who used to live in the area got to return home for the first time yesterday. they were taken by bus to their former homes in seaside heights where they had an hour to pack what they could. some of them say they were not prepared for what they saw. >> you have a list and you are prepared to get what you want but you -- you spend like -- 15 minutes just devastated, just trying to look to see what's on the floor. >> reporter: at the main staging center in tom's river new jersey a company has been making restore the shore t- shirts to raise money for schools and shelters. more buses will take people in to the disaster zone each day through tuesday. >>> occupy wall street finds a new cause. helping, the victims of sandy. see how their relief effort is helping people get the supplies they need coming up at 7:17. >> it's hard to imagine we had warm weather just at the beginning of the week. >> short time. >> already another cold morning and rosemary watching the temperatures for us. will it warm up? >> it'll feel a lot like what we

hurricane sandy hit shore in the northeast. crews are still working to restore power to 120,000 homes in new jersey. 4,000 residents are still living in shelters. fema has approved more than $450 million in assistance. in the meantime, governor andrew cuomo plans to ask the government for $30 billion in disaster aid. >>> the federal red cross says it has received $117 million in donations to help the victims of sandy. the agency also says its response has been near flawless. some residents in certain areas disagree with that. they say the help has been sporadic and very difficult to find. >> red cross hasn't offered any assistance until yesterday. they take people's hard working money to assist people, and when push comes to shove, they don't assist. >> i think we are near flawless in this operation. i'm just so proud of everything that we are doing on the ground. >> the red cross says sandy poses unique challenges. it's the first cold weather hurricane, and it struck in an extremely urban area. the agency maintains it has more than 5,700 volunteers in the region who have already handed out

into complaints the red cross is not doing enough to help victims of sandy. are donations getting to the people who need them? let's go "outfront." good evening, everyone. tonight, a rescisky affair. there are new questions about the affair that led cia director david petraeus to resign and when did he pose a national security risk. here's what we can tell you now. the affair came to light during an fbi investigation of so-called jealousy e-mail sent by paula broadwell to a woman in tampa named jill kelley. an official confirms to cnn -- to stop sending harassing e-mails to kelley, who along with her husband has known petraeus and their family for more than five years. that couple met the four star general when he was stationed at medil air force base in tampa. a description of the e-mails seems to validate what a friend of petraeus tells us, that petraeus felt broadwell had shown a possessiveness toward him. as to whether she gained any information during her relationship to petraeus, here's something we found. a speech she gave in october of 2006. here's what it had to say. >> had actually ha

of this country's secrets. >>> and sandy sales. while thousands of victims struggle in the aftermath of hurricane sandy, the damage brought on by the storm is giving one industry a boost. captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning, one of america's highest ranking military leaders has been caught up in the investigation that led to the resignation of cia director david petraeus. general john allen is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan. allen is under investigation by the pentagon for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelly. she's the tampa, florida, woman, who is said to have received threatening e-mails from petraeus's mistress. a pentagon official says allen and kelly exchanged up to 30,000 communications between 2010 and 2012. it's unclear if they were involved in sexual matters or classified information. allen will remain the u.s. commander in afghanistan for now. but these latest developments only serve to widen the scandal that has gripped the nation's capital since friday. tara mergener is in washington with more.
